Saved from the wrecker's ball
The government on Friday rushed to save a 70-year-old Chinese-style mansion from the wrecker's ball.
However, according to some observers, damage to some of the building's interior may be irreversible.
At the government's request, the Antiquities Advisory Board moved quickly on Friday after it was reported the building on Stubbs Road, King Yin Lei, was undergoing renovation.
It was quickly decided the building should be placed on the proposed monuments list and this will be gazetted on Saturday.
The declaration will be valid for 12 months during which time the building cannot be demolished, altered or changed in any way without permission from the Antiquities Authority.
This will also give the authority the opportunity to consider if the building should be declared a monument and to negotiate possible preservation options with the owner.
Secretary for Development Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, speaking after a special meeting with the Antiquities Advisory Board, said the mansion was assessed on Thursday night and was qualified to be listed as a proposed monument.
"All work which may destroy or harm King Yin Lei, including removing tiles, cannot be proceeded with," Cheng said, admitting it was rare for the government to gazette an order on a Saturday.
However, Lam said she did not know when the government could discuss the mansion's future with the owner.
Board chairman Edward Ho Sing- tin said the move to list King Yin Lei as a proposed heritage site was unanimous. King Yin Lei is three-story Chinese-styled mansion with a gross floor area of 25,000 square feet, with the whole site covering 50,000 square feet.
The mansion was said to be undergoing "intensive renovations" when the government decided to act.
According to reporters from Sing Tao Daily, sister publication of The Standard, almost all the roof tiles and the colored-glass windows have been removed, and parts of the roof are covered with canvas.
King Yin Lei's name plaque and some interior walls were also damaged.
Work inside the mansion was continuing even as Lam was announcing the move to put it on the monuments list.
The mansion has reportedly been sold to ICE Wisdom for HK$430 millio in a deal to be finalized next week.
According to a source, King Yin Lei was bought by current owner Stephen Yow Mok-shing's father in 1977 for HK$24 million. Yow is a Canadian resident who stays in the mansion during his vacations and has a full-time gardener. In an interview with Sing Tao, Yow admitted receiving several letters from government departments in 2004 regarding a site visit but said he had not replied to them.
Conservancy Association chairwoman Betty Ho Siu-fong described the government's announcement as a ``late spring.''
She added: ``The government's response was too slow as it only came after renovation work had begun.
Centaline Properties chairman Shih Wing-ching described the government's move as ``unhealthy,'' saying it had moved from one extreme to the other on heritage preservation. winnie.chong@singtaonewscorp.com

My suggestion

I think the HK government should make Mother's Day a public holiday .I think it is meaningful for all people.Because it shows that mothers are important. All people can enjoy the day. we can get together with our mother even our family at the day.we can use the day to express our love.And we will have a good time and improve our relationship with our mother at the day.Moveover,all mothers will relax after they work hard.
In conclusion,I think Mother's Day is suitable to be a public holiday.

Reflection

.I am very happy to learn about something in the Summer class.I had learnt reading skills and did a project with my group members.For the project,we went to a few tutorial centers in Tsuen Wan.we choosed MODERN and KINGS GLORY EDUCATION for s4/s5 students.And we went to serch information ,take photos and collect leaflets.I learnt about how to do the project ,how to search information.It makes us team work.I had some experience from the project.It is good for my english .Moveover,I learn something from 10 to 11:30.It is good for my speaking .I can improve my speaking skill from Ms Fung.

My favourite character of the film is Alex.Freddie plays that character in the film.He did a good job.he looks like an adventurer.he is brave ,helpful and strong.The qualities of him I admire are brave and funny.
I like the effect as it looks real. for example, there were ten million scorpion to kill person.
the most exciting scene is that O'connell want to fight with the evils.

Today I am going to introduce a story book titled Superbird.It was written by Tomlinson.
The story takes place in a strang planet and this story is talk about a spaceship called Superbird,crashes on a strange planet and everyone on it were dead-except for Mary. Mary helped the people of the planet to re-build their spaceship. and used it to return home.she had many difficult problem when she was on the way to go back home .Finally,she came back to the earth sussessfully .
My favourite character is Mary,who is a astronaut.She had a exciting experience on Superbird.She was brave and strong Although She met a lot of strange and unfriengly people,Moreover,she knew her lover was killed by some strange people.she was quick-witted to breakaway from the strange people and danger.she was never give up to live.
The most exciting part is Mary met the strange people in the Supebird.And she had a dangerouse experience in it.First ,she met the Superbird and she had danger.Her friends all were killed by the strange people.Second,She met a friendly people in Superbird.But she need to help to breakaway from the strange people.
So I like the story very much.the story is a exciting ficition. The story is easy to understand.Finally,It is important that I can learn how to face the danger and never give up from the story.

Today,I am going to introduce a story book titled Ghosh Town at sundown. It was written by Mary Pope Osborne in 1997.

The story takes place in house .

And the story is talk about Jack and Annie want to solve the Next Tree House Riddle.They have an adventure filled with horse thieves,a lost colt, rattlesnakes and a cowboy named Slim.

why I choose it?First,becanse It is very exciting and magical.Jack,Annie,Slim can use the magical book to breakaway the dangerous.Second,I like the main characters very much.Who?They are Jack and Annie.Why I like them so much?Becanse they are pretty smart,brave,heloful and friendly.Jack,Although he is 8 years old. HE was very clam when he met rattlesnake.Jack can use the majical book to save the small horse from dangerous.And Annie who is 7 years old is very sweet and easy-going.She helps the horse to get together with his mother.I can learnt helping people in need as possible as we can from Jack and Annie.

The visitor that I have interviewed is named Lynelle Hansen.She is a nurse.She lives in Kiron Iowa.
She came to HK to help teach English and share Jesus.She likes Basketball,Baseball.She likes Reading,music,grand children and seeing movies.She thinks people in HK are very friendly and She likes HK food very much.
She told me that she and her team members to resturant for lunch.She said me that she likes tea.milkand chinese food very much.
In the project ,I learned about Amrican culture and life stye.I knew about Amrican weather.I also developed a strong interest in learning the English language.And I saw Lynelle's family photoes.
Today,I have a good time with the beautiful and nice visitor.
